Pemberton's Climbing Trees
There is nothing more awe
inspiring than standing next to a huge ancient Karri tree and gazing up
into its distant crown. Nothing perhaps, except peering down from the top
of such a giant.
In Pemberton
you can do both. A series of fire lookouts were constructed in the top of
Karri trees, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s. These lookouts in the
treetops were an ingenious way of spotting fires in such tall forest.
Today you can still climb some of these lookout trees and take in the
view.
The
Gloucester Tree, in the Gloucester National Park, is only 3 kms from the
Post Office.
The Dave
Evans Bicentennial Tree and Diamond Tree are about a 15 minute drive from
Pemberton.
Beedelup Falls
On Vasse Highway 18km from Pemberton.
These falls with a total drop of 106 metres are spread over a series of
rocky cascades. They are spectacular, best in the winter months after rain
has fallen.
Bushwalking
Pemberton spoils those who want to explore on foot. There are more than 20
trails close to town which are well marked and described in a guidebook.
Trails range from short strolls to day and overnight hikes.
The Bibbulmun Track, a long distance trail stretching from Perth to
Albany, also passes through town. This trail has well catered overnight
camps and rest areas at regular intervals.
Trout Fishing
Pemberton's rivers and streams abound with fish or you can experience the
joys of trout fishing at King Trout adjoining the Warren National Park.
4 Wheel Driving
D'Entrecasteaux National Park covers 118,OOOha.
There are many opportunities for beach fishing and four wheel driving.
Pemberton Tramway
See the Karri Forest on the Pemberton Tramway travelling over many streams and
brooks on wooden trestle bridges.
Wildflowers
The wildflowers of the Karri forest are wonderful to see in the myriad of
colours which seem to change week by week during the spring.
The best time for viewing these is from September to mid November but this
may vary from year to year with the weather conditions. The tiny but
exquisite orchids can best he seen on foot.
